The export of heavy units hit its lowest level in the past three years for a similar month.
In April 2024, Mexico exported 11,391 heavy vehicles, representing a 21.2% decrease compared to the same month of the previous year, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
This is the lowest volume reported for the fourth month of the year since 2021.
The decline is due to lower production in the country, as 14,950 heavy units were assembled in April, a 14.85% reduction compared to the same month in 2023.
In the first four months of 2024, the export of heavy vehicles from Mexico decreased by 11.5% year-on-year, with 53,472 units sent.
Production of these vehicles also fell by 9.9% in the same period.
The United States was the main destination for exports, with a 95.9% share, followed by Canada with 2.8% and Colombia with 0.6%.
Internal market
Inegi data revealed that in April 2024, 4,456 heavy vehicles were sold at retail and 4,387 at wholesale in the national market, representing increases of 14.8% and 13.1%, respectively, compared to the same month in 2023.
The best-selling brands at retail were Kenworth with 1,060 units, Freightliner with 1,105, and International with 660.
In the wholesale segment, the leading brands were Kenworth with 1,185 units, Freightliner with 1,181, and International with 535.
Freightliner was the top export brand in April 2024, with 9,307 units, followed by International with 2,884 and Kenworth with 1,805.
