The meeting between the Mexican president and the president-elect of the United States occurred just two days after Trump announced his intention to apply a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada.
President Claudia Sheinbaum held a meeting this Wednesday with the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, to discuss the Mexican government’s strategy regarding the migratory flow to the northern border, among other issues that have been a cause of concern for the Republican since his electoral campaign.
“I had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump. I explained to him the Mexican strategy regarding the migratory phenomenon and stressed that caravans are not arriving at the northern border, since they are attended to within Mexico,” said Sheinbaum through a message on the social network X. The publication was accompanied by a photograph where she appears with the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente.
Trump highlights Sheinbaum’s “commitment”
Later, President-elect Donald Trump posted a message on his social network Truth Social in which he highlighted President Claudia Sheinbaum’s commitment to stop the transit of migrants through Mexico to the border with the United States.
«I had an excellent conversation with the new president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. She agreed to take measures to stop migration through Mexico to the United States, helping to secure our southern border. We also discussed ways to combat the flow of drugs into the United States, as well as the consumption of these substances. It was a very productive conversation!» Trump said in his post.
In a second message posted on the same social network, Trump reiterated that the Mexican government will take immediate measures to prevent people from reaching the southern border of the United States. “Mexico will prevent people from reaching our southern border, with immediate actions,” Trump said.
Sheinbaum responds to Trump’s comments
After Donald Trump’s statement, President Sheinbaum posted another message on social media X to clarify some points discussed during the conversation, particularly regarding Mexico’s strategy to address the migration phenomenon.
“In our conversation with President Trump, I explained to him the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has implemented to deal with the migration phenomenon, always respecting human rights. Thanks to this, we attend to migrants and caravans before they reach the border. We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close borders, but to build bridges between governments and between peoples,” wrote Sheinbaum Pardo.
Earlier on Wednesday, at her usual morning press conference, President Sheinbaum stated that the meeting with the US president-elect will take place “in due time,” and stressed that the Mexican authorities “are not sitting idly by” in the face of Trump’s tariff threats.
Last Tuesday, Sheinbaum responded with a letter in which she urged Trump “not to threaten” and to sit down to talk to resolve the differences.
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed that members of her government have already contacted members of the campaign team and the future administration of Donald Trump, with whom friction has already arisen due to his tariff policy.
