In early February, after his meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Panamanian President José Ramón Mulino announced that he would not renew the Silk Road Memorandum of Understanding signed with China. This decision follows Donald Trump’s threats to regain control of the Panama Canal. China’s influence in Latin America is undeniable. In Mexico, questions have also arisen as to whether China is using the country as a route to access the United States. In this context of protectionism in the Trump era, it is necessary to analyse the different aspects of the Silk Road and assess how present China is in Latin American economies.
