Turkey has started exporting about 15,000 tonnes of eggs to the United States after an outbreak of bird flu disrupted supplies, raised prices and sparked talks with other producers, a senior industry official said on Wednesday. Ibrahim Afyon, chairman of Turkey’s Central Union of Egg Producers (YUM-BIR), told Reuters the shipments began this month and will run through July. for 5 seconds

“The export will be carried out by our member companies, with the necessary authorizations, and will be coordinated by two companies in charge of the process,” Afyon said. “The shipment will involve a total of 15,000 tons of eggs, equivalent to 700 containers.” The United States has been working to curb the spread of bird flu, which was first detected in Texas dairy cattle in March last year and has since spread to several states. Since April, the virus has infected about 70 people, including one fatal case, mostly among farm workers exposed to infected poultry or livestock. An outbreak of bird flu that began in 2022 has destroyed about 160 million chickens, turkeys and other birds, contributing to the egg shortage. In response, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has given conditional approval to Zoetis for use of an avian flu vaccine in poultry. The agency is also working on rebuilding a stockpile of vaccines adapted to the current strain affecting both commercial and wild birds.
