Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that his country is willing to strengthen trade ties with Mexico, following the announcement by President Claudia Sheinbaum about her intention to implement a plan to replace certain Chinese imports with national products.
Maintaining stable and sound economic and trade ties meets the common aspirations of both countries and serves the long-term interests of all parties. China is willing to work with Mexico to maintain the solid momentum of our bilateral trade and economic cooperation and boost the development of both countries,” he said at a press conference.
At the recent People’s Morning Conference on November 22, the Mexican president presented a plan focused on reducing imports of products from China. This strategy, inspired by a proposal by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, arose after concerns raised by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said that Mexico was operating as a route for the entry of Asian products into the North American market.
“We have a plan that the Secretary of Finance is developing with the Secretary of Economy, with the objective of replacing those imports that come from China and producing most of them in Mexico, either with Mexican companies or with companies mainly from North America; and if not, in relation to other countries with which we have relations, such as Europe, for example. So, that is a plan that we have,” explained Sheinbaum.
Through her official account on X, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry stressed that the relationship with Mexico is based on mutual trust and the pursuit of common welfare, also emphasizing that trade ties between the two countries have been key to the development of various industries.
“China and Mexico are good friends who trust each other and good partners who seek common development. Imports from China have played an important role in boosting the development of Mexico’s manufacturing industry and improving its competitiveness in foreign trade, and have brought tangible benefits to the Mexican people,” the spokesperson concluded.
